GoutMe

Your AI Gout
Companion

log it when it hits. it does the rest.

GoutMe runs in the background and never lectures. Sleep, skin temperature, heart rate, water, weather and your medicine timing are collected for you, then tested against your flare days and clear days with real statistics. At 3 a.m. it asks for one tap, keeps what helps you one tap away, and turns it all into a report for your GP or rheumatologist.

why log each flare?

In 724 people with gout followed online for a year, 1,433 flares were logged: the risk of a flare starting between midnight and 8 a.m. was 2.4 times the daytime risk.

Choi et al., Arthritis Rheumatol 2015

Log it when
it hits

one tap at 3 a.m. details later, or never
Tap now, fill in laterLog Flare opens on Timing. Tap now saves the entry at this moment and closes the form; an in-progress card waits on Home until you end it or add to it. A flare that runs for days is ended when it ends, from the card or the Journal.
Where, and how it feelsThe symptom page is split in two. Where: big toe, other toes, midfoot or arch, heel, ankle, knee, fingers, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip. How it feels: swelling, redness, heat in the joint, throbbing pain, pain at the lightest touch, stiffness, cannot bear weight, limping, fever or chills, fatigue, pain keeping you awake.
Say it in your own wordsPaint the picture takes typed or spoken text. “Woke at two with the big toe on fire, could not stand the sheet on it, took the colchicine and put the foot up.” It fills in the pages after it for you to check, with suggestions in italics you can remove.
why a risk, day by day?

Seven or more drinks over two days went with a 2.5 times higher chance of a flare, and the effect was clearest within the following 24 hours, in 197 people with gout.

Zhang et al., Am J Med 2006

Your risk,
day by day

what is pushing on you today, and what pushed yesterday
The bucketEach trigger and early sign adds to the bucket by the weight you or the AI setup gave it, and that contribution fades day by day. Cross your Mild line and the dial turns amber; cross High and it is deeper amber. Zone words, no siren.
What is pushing on itActive triggers under the dial lists the top three things in the bucket right now, with how much each adds. Tap the dial for every contributor in order, and the 14-day history to see how the level rose and fell.
Read it, tune itA daily notification tells you the morning's risk; switch it off in Notifications if you would rather look when you want. Customize home hides the card altogether, and Risk Model under Settings moves your Low, Mild and High lines and the day-by-day fade.
why test, not assume?

Of 550 people with gout asked what set off their flares, only 37.5% could name a trigger at all: alcohol for 14%, red meat or seafood for 6%, dehydration, injury and weather for about 5% each.

Abhishek et al., PLoS One 2017

Triggers, tested
not assumed

sleep, heat, stress and your body, collected for you
Collected in the backgroundSleep timing and stages, stress, recovery, steps, water from a linked food app, sugar and caffeine, pressure, humidity and temperature, each checked every hour against a fixed line and your own 14-day normal.
The ones only you knowBeer, spirits, wine, not enough water. Red meat, organ meat, shellfish, oily fish, sugary drinks, sweets, a large meal, fasting, a crash diet. An injury or knock to the joint, a long walk or standing, tight shoes, intense exercise, an illness, surgery. A started or missed urate-lowering dose, a water tablet, low-dose aspirin. One tap each.
Tests, never rulesNo “give up beer”. Each factor is compared across your flare days and your clear days and gets a plain verdict: strong link, some link, or no link found. What you do with that is yours, and your GP's.

The day
before

early signs you feel, and the ones your wearable sees
What you noticeA twinge in the joint, warmth or tingling in the joint, joint stiffness, a mild ache, itchy skin over the joint, shoes that feel tight, a restless night, feeling run down, very thirsty, dark urine, irritability. One tap from Quick Log.
What your wearable seesSkin temperature out of its range, resting heart rate high, HRV low, respiratory rate high, SpO2 low: each is a collected early sign, noted when your morning numbers cross your own line.
What your phone seesPhone unlocks, screen brightness and media volume high or low against your usual are early signs too, collected on Android and iPhone without you doing anything.
why sleep?

Among 15,879 people with sleep apnoea and 63,296 without, 4.9% versus 2.6% went on to develop gout, a 42% higher risk after adjustment.

Blagojevic-Bucknall et al., Arthritis Rheumatol 2019

Your sleep
collected for you

duration, timing, stages and disturbances
What it recordsDuration, sleep score, efficiency, disturbances, deep, REM and light sleep, when you fell asleep and when you woke. A wearable or health app gives stages and a score; an Android phone alone gives the timing.
Sleep triggers, collectedBedtime late, wake time early or late, sleep duration high or low, deep sleep high, REM and light sleep high or low, disturbances high or low. Each is noted when your night crosses its line.
The nights only you knowShort sleep and sleep apnea are one-tap triggers, and a restless night is an early sign you can log in the morning.
why your body?

Across ten studies of weight loss in people with gout, 3 to 34 kg lost, six of the eight that measured it reported fewer flares.

Nielsen et al., Ann Rheum Dis 2017

Your body,
collected

skin temperature, heart rate, steps and stress, every morning
Skin temperature and heartSkin temperature, heart rate variability, resting heart rate and respiratory rate from a connected source, with SpO2 when your device measures it, all plotted under Monitor and Physical Health. Skin temp high and low are collected early signs.
Stress, recovery and stepsGarmin and Oura send their own stress score; for other sources the app works one out each morning from HRV and resting heart rate against your 14-day baseline. Steps high, strain and recovery are collected triggers, for the long walk that does not need typing.
Screens and the phoneScreen time and late-night screen time on Android, phone unlocks, brightness and media volume on both platforms. Collected without you doing anything.
why weather?

In 632 people with gout, hot days went with about 40% more flares, and hot plus dry air doubled the odds compared with moderate weather.

Neogi et al., Am J Epidemiol 2014

The weather
for where you are

heat, humidity, pressure, wind, UV and storms, for your city
Heat and humidityTemperature high and low and humidity high and low are collected triggers, checked against a fixed line and your own 14-day normal. Hot weather and cold weather are also one-tap triggers for the day you felt it.
Pressure, and the dropWhen today's pressure is 10 hPa or more below yesterday's, a card on Home shows both numbers. Pressure high and pressure low are collected triggers too.
Wind, UV, storms, pollen and airCollected daily for your city from the moment you allow location, with a thunderstorm banner on storm days. Pollen and air quality are there as well, off until you switch them on in Data.
why food, tested?

In 633 people with gout, the highest two-day purine intake went with 4.8 times the flare risk of the lowest, and animal sources mattered more than plant ones.

Zhang et al., Ann Rheum Dis 2012

Food, alcohol
and water

a test for you, not a rule for everyone
Beer, wine, spiritsOne tap each from Quick Log, on the day, with or without a flare. During setup you say how often each shows up around your flares, and the ones you pick become favourites. The app cannot see a drink on its own; the tap is the record.
Water, sugar and caffeine, summedWater from a food app that writes to Apple Health or Health Connect, and sugar and caffeine from what you eat, summed per day and shown on the Diet card in Monitor. Hydration low, sugar high and caffeine high and low are collected triggers against your own two-week normal.
Add food in secondsSearch the USDA database, scan a barcode or photograph your plate, and the food comes back with its nutrients for you to check. Logging food in the app is part of Premium; nutrition from Apple Health or Health Connect comes in free.
why your own history?

In 724 people with gout, one to two drinks in the prior day went with a 36% higher flare risk and two to four with 51%, for beer, wine and spirits alike.

Neogi et al., Am J Med 2014

It finds your
patterns

your flare days, next to your clear ones
What Happened, and the combinationsEach factor compared around your flares and on your other days, with a plain verdict: strong link, some link, or no link found. Some things only go together, beer and a hot day, a long walk and tight shoes, so the pairs that line up with your flare days are listed too.
What Worked, and What Strengthens YouEvery medicine and relief you logged, read back against how your flares went. Beside it, the habits and steady signals that turn up on your days with no flare, measured against your own normal.
What changed, and how it affected youThe last 30 days against the 30 before, your severity spread and top joints and symptoms, what you missed because of a flare, and what you were doing and where.
why keep the record?

Across 24 studies, only 46% of people with gout took their urate-lowering medicine at least 80% of the time.

Scheepers et al., Semin Arthritis Rheum 2018

Ask about your
own data

a chat that reads your history, and tests worth running

Ask GoutMe reads your own sleep, skin temperature, heart rate, water, weather, flares and medicines and answers in plain words. Insights then takes what is already showing up in your data and turns each pattern into one thing worth testing for a week.

Ask GoutMeA chat with read access to your sleep, skin temperature, HRV, resting heart rate, steps, water, weather, flares, triggers, medicines and reliefs. “When was my last flare, and what did I log the two days before?” gets the date and the list. Mid-flare it keeps to what helps now and what you logged.
Tests worth runningEach one starts from your own numbers and ends the same way: worth testing, a week of one specific condition, then the app compares your days. Never a rule, never a diet, never a dose.
Setup in your own wordsAt the start, talk, type or import a file about your gout. The AI fills in what you told it and suggests what else is worth comparing; you change any of it on the next pages.
Dismiss anything that does not match your reality and it stays hidden. Starting points to discuss with your GP or rheumatologist, not diagnoses.
why bring it to your GP?

In the UK in 2012, 2.5% of adults had gout, up 64% since 1997, yet only 18.6% of newly diagnosed people started urate-lowering treatment within six months.

Kuo et al., Ann Rheum Dis 2015

Bring it to your

why note what helps?

In 633 people with gout, cherries in the prior two days went with 35% fewer flares, and cherries plus allopurinol with 75% fewer.

Zhang et al., Arthritis Rheum 2012

Set it once
see what worked

allopurinol once, the rescue tablets and the things that help
Reliefs, one tapIce pack, elevate the foot, rest the joint, loose shoes or sandals, gentle movement, a walking stick or crutch, the bedsheet off the foot, a cool room, water, cherry juice, rescue medication, lying down, sleep, a distraction.
Treatments, set onceAdd allopurinol, febuxostat or another daily medicine with its amount, how often and the day it started. The treatment page shows your flare days a month before and since, average severity and duration, and what else moved. A missed dose is a one-tap trigger.
What WorkedEach medicine and relief read back against how your flares went: works well, some help, no clear effect, or not enough yet, with the reason underneath. Colchicine, naproxen, ibuprofen, prednisolone and the rest are there as rescue items.
why understand it?

Of 517 people with gout, 95% of those given nurse-led education and engagement reached the urate target at two years, against 30% with usual care.

Questions

What is GoutMe?

An app for iPhone and Android for people who get gout flares. You log a flare when it hits, one tap. GoutMe collects sleep, skin temperature, heart rate, water, weather and your medicine timing on its own, compares your flare days with your clear ones, and turns what it finds into a report for your GP or rheumatologist.

Can an app help with gout?

An app cannot lower your uric acid, and GoutMe does not claim to. What it can do is answer “what goes with my flares?” from your own data instead of the leaflet, keep the things that help you one tap away, show you the weeks you kept to your medicine and the weeks you did not, and put the pattern on paper for your GP or rheumatologist.

Does it predict gout flares?

No. Risk today is a sum of what you logged and what was collected over the last seven days, faded by age. It describes the week you have had. The app never says a flare is coming.

Is GoutMe free?

Logging flares, early signs, triggers, medicines and reliefs, the background collection, the Journal, Risk today, the community and the nearby list are free. Premium adds Insights, Ask GoutMe, the tests worth running, Active triggers, the 7-day outlook, the mid-flare view, the Full Report and PDF, the Treatments page, practitioner sharing and food logging: £7.99 a month or £54.99 a year. New accounts get 14 days of Premium free.

Will it tell me to give up beer or steak?

No. There is no rule that fits everyone. GoutMe tests each factor against your own flare days and clear days and tells you whether it matters for you. If it does, it suggests a week worth testing, never a rule. Diet and medicines stay between you and your doctor.

Does it count purines or measure uric acid?

No. The app does not calculate purines and has no lab log yet. Red meat, shellfish and the rest are one-tap entries, and the comparison runs on the days you tapped against the days you did not. Setup asks for your last urate level once, as a range.

Do I need a wearable?

No. Weather comes from your location, your phone can read screen time and sleep timing on Android, and the foods, drinks and medicines are one tap. A wearable, Apple Health or Health Connect adds sleep stages, skin temperature, heart rate, HRV and stress. Garmin, Oura, Polar and WHOOP connect directly; Apple Watch comes in through Apple Health.

Is my health data private?

Yes. We don't sell your data and we don't share it with advertisers. All health data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and you can delete your account and your data at any time. A practitioner sees your data only where you accepted their request, and a trusted person only what you invited them to.

Is GoutMe a medical device?

No. It shows patterns in your own data to help you and your clinician; it does not diagnose or treat anything and cannot tell gout from an infected joint. A hot, swollen joint with a fever, feeling very unwell, or a recently injected or operated joint needs urgent care today.
