Food, alcohol
and water

a test for you, not a rule for everyone

“No beer, no steak, no prawns” is the most repeated gout advice and one of the least personal. GoutMe does not tell you to give up anything. Beer, wine, spirits, red meat, shellfish, sugary drinks and a day with too little water are one-tap triggers; sugar, caffeine and water are summed from what you eat or from a nutrition app you already use; and the app checks whether the days with more of them are your flare days.

why food, tested?

In 633 people with gout, the highest two-day purine intake went with 4.8 times the flare risk of the lowest, and animal sources mattered more than plant ones.

Zhang et al., Ann Rheum Dis 2012

No general rule

There is no single food rule that fits everyone with gout, so GoutMe never gives one. It compares your days with more and less of each thing and says whether it went with your flare days. If a pattern shows up, Insights suggests a week worth testing, then the app compares your days again. Your GP or rheumatologist decides what to make of it.

Purines are not counted

The app does not calculate the purine content of a meal and does not measure your uric acid. Red meat, organ meat, shellfish and oily fish are taps, made when you ate them, and what the app tests is the day you tapped against the day you did not. That is a weaker measure than a lab and an honest one.

Where the numbers come from

Food you add in the app: a search of the USDA database, a barcode scan through Open Food Facts, or a photo of the meal that you check and correct before it is added. Or nutrition a food app already writes to Apple Health or Health Connect, which comes in on its own, water included. Either way the day is summed: calories, protein, carbs, fat, fibre, sugar, caffeine, water and a long list of vitamins and minerals.

Tested like any other trigger

Hydration low, sugar high and caffeine high and low fire from the daily totals against a fixed line and your own two-week normal. What Happened then tests them, along with beer, wine, spirits, red meat, shellfish, sugary drinks and fasting, against your flares with the same statistics as sleep or weather, and What Strengthens You shows the eating and drinking days that turn up when you have no flare.

Where it lives in the app

Food on the Log tab, and Diet under Monitor. The Diet screen holds the food search, barcode scanner and meal photo, today's log with water, sugar and caffeine, every nutrient, and the history with your flares marked. Beer, wine, spirits, red meat, shellfish, sugary drinks, not enough water and fasting are tiles in Quick Log.

What it needs from you

A tap for the drinks and foods that matter, when you have them. Then whatever you can add, or a nutrition app that writes to Apple Health or Health Connect. A gap is just a day without food data. Adding food in the app is part of Premium; the one-tap triggers are free.

Questions

Do I have to log every meal?

No. Tap the drinks and foods that matter when you have them, log a meal when you can, or let a nutrition app pass it in through Apple Health or Health Connect. The statistics work with whatever is there, and a gap is just a day without food data.

Is food logging free?

Searching, scanning and photographing food in the app is part of Premium. Nutrition that arrives from Apple Health or Health Connect comes in on the free app, and the one-tap triggers for beer, wine, spirits, red meat, shellfish, sugary drinks and not enough water are free.

Will it tell me to stop drinking beer?

No. It tells you whether beer went with your flare days, and if it did, suggests a week worth testing. What you do with that is yours, and your GP's if you want to ask.
